They decide not to tell Damon, who also overheard the false break up to better convince Katherine of its legitimacy.

In Kill or Be Killed, Caroline and Elena are in The Mystic Falls Historical Society Volunteer Day at the function Caroline described to Elena that Elizabeth is all of a sudden "mother of the year" when she was trying to avoid her the most. Then as they begin to paint on what looked like wood stain and/or preservative on a park ground building pillar and a wood water pump. Caroline noted Elena's apparent boredom and says she is just babbling; but Elena encourages her to go on and she does, Caroline saying she was bitchy to her mother which was "...par for the course with us". "Us" meaning vampires.

Elena seemed preoccupied despite what she said so Caroline asked how things were with her and Stefan and if she heard from him "No, not since the fight" Elena lied referring to the "break up" at the Mystic Grill. She tells Caroline that he has been pushing her away from him because a jealous Katherine might hurt her and she doesn't know how to change her mind. Caroline puts down her brush and goes over to say to her that perhaps that Stefan has a point because Katherine is dangerous. Continuing the lie as her best friend looks at her intently Elena says that she knows that Katherine is dangerous and that Stefan is trying to protect her, but it felt like giving up, that they were stronger than that. To that Caroline just shrugs regretfully.

A few minutes later, still applying wood stain to the facilities Caroline notes the longing looks between Elena and Stefan and comments on it to Elena. Elena puts down her brush and says she is going to go talk to him. Caroline tries to talk her out of it but Elena blows past her heading for Stefan frustrating her. As Elena heads for her alleged ex-boyfriend Damon comes up behind Caroline asking what is Elena's problem. "Don't worry about it" Caroline says. He then asks why she was being such a bitch to her mother. "Don't worry about it" she repeats and walks off to finish re-staining the column but tuning her ears to listen in on Stefan and Elena.

Ignoring the question Elena asks where is Stefan, Mason, with a hard face, says he did see him or Damon and walks closer to the two. Elena asks where they are. "You don't need me for that. I'll let your friend sniff them out" he says sardonically to Caroline. Caroline looks at Mason with a hard face as well. "Does your mother know what you are?!?" Mason ask hostilely. Caroline is taken aback that he knows. "I'm happy to tell her" he says. She makes a move about to go into superspeed to attack him, but Caroline stops in her tracks as Mason threatens to snap Elena's neck. Caroline manages to free Elena, and runs immediately to look for Stefan and Damon.

A crying Caroline tells her that she can't go home. Elena asks "why not?". Tenderly Elena coaches out of her, it is because Katherine is going to be there. She confesses that she will want to know everything that happened that day and also that she had to spy on Elena and report back to Katherine. Elena tells her that she knows and she was so mad at Caroline then she tried to put herself in her position to try to figure out why she would do that to her and Stefan after being such a friend to her. Elena gets up and sits next to her friend. Insightfully she asks "Who did she threaten?", "Matt" Caroline said, saying that she was very scared of Katherine. Elena said she should be, they all should be scared of her. Caroline asks why is Katherine doing this to them. "That's the million dollar question" Elena says. Caroline, despite being many times stronger than Elena, settles in Elena's embrace with her head against her chest feeling safe and falling asleep in the arms of her best friend.

In Plan B, Stefan is trapped in the well full of vervain and Elena calls to Caroline for help. Bonnie and Caroline walked at human speed to the old Lockwood well in the woods. Caroline hears Elena's cries for help. She rushed to her aid at super speed until she reached the well, Elena told Caroline that Stefan was trapped in the well (it was Bonnie who texted him with the location of the moonstone). Caroline made a move to dive down but Elena told her that it was filled with vervain.

Caroline looked for something and found a chain in a neat pile. She took the end of the chain and threw it over the cross bar. A few moments later Elena had tied the end of the chain around her waist like a harness and was getting ready for Caroline to lower her down inside. At that moment Bonnie finally caught up asking what happened saying Caroline just took off in a blur. Caroline explained that she heard Elena screaming and urged Bonnie to help Elena over the lip of the well. They manage to get to Stefan and they rescued him.

In Katerina, in the woods, Elena, who is carrying a big bag, asks Caroline to tell everyone she left school because she wasn't feeling well. She asks her to keep Stefan busy. Caroline is unsure, explaining that she is terrible at lying. Elena points out that Caroline managed to keep her occupied when Katherine asked her, and Caroline explains that she was threatened. Eventually, Elena asks Caroline to promise as her friend not to say anything and Caroline agrees. The pair go down into the tomb and Caroline asks "Are you sure you want to do this?". Elena points out that Katherine is the only person who knows the truth about Klaus. Caroline reminds her that Katherine lies about everything but Elena replies "I can't just sit back and wait. I have to know." Caroline takes off the tomb door and Elena calls after Katherine. Suddenly, Katherine shuffles forward and croaks "Hello, Elena." Elena tells Caroline to leave; pointing out that Katherine can't hurt her as long as she stays on the right side of the door. Caroline leaves hesitantly.

In Daddy Issues, after that Caroline is abducted and tortured, Stefan calls Elena to go and accompany Caroline because she needs her. Elena and Bonnie go to her house, saying that they are having a slumber party at her house and Caroline breaks down, crying peak gust both hug her tightly.

Bonnie uses her powers to light the candles on Caroline's cake and Elena asks Caroline to make a wish. Later, Elena, Bonnie, Matt, and Caroline are still held up in the creepy building. Caroline is busy on her phone and Elena is skeptical about what she's doing.

Caroline admits that she might have text messaged Tyler. Bonnie defends Caroline and turns on Elena, mad at her for having Damon compel Jeremy to leave town. Matt intervenes and Bonnie leaves. Later, Caroline, Elena and Bonnie arrive to the Salvatores' house and Damon, Jeremy and Matt are celebrating the imminent death of Katherine, they joined to the others and start to drink too. Later Nadia appears, she is looking for help to carry out a plan to save Katherine's life but nobody want to help, so she threat them telling that she has kidnapped to Matt locked in the safe where Stefan was.

In The Devil Inside, Aaron leaves a message for Elena with Caroline. Later, Stefan asks for Caroline's favor to reconcile Damon and Elena. Caroline reluctantly tries to help Damon reconcile with Elena. At the party thrown in the Lockwood mansion Caroline, who is unaware of Katherine living inside Elena, tells about the incident that happened between her and Klaus.

In Total Eclipse of the Heart, Caroline who is still unaware of Elena being possessed by Katherine invites her to the Bitter Ball and becomes curious when she invites Stefan for the party.

In Resident Evil, Caroline is shown getting ready in her dorm room when Elena wakes up suddenly after dreaming about Stefan. When Caroline questions Elena responds that everything is fine. They both arrive at the Mystic Grill to meet Caroline's mother. Elena starts to have visions again about Stefan, and Caroline interrupts. Elena tells her about having visions again and Caroline gets a call from Stefan stating the same about Elena. Elena tries to call Damon to inform him about it, but when he avoids her call, Caroline rings Enzo and informs him and Damon about the visions seen by Elena and Stefan. Later, Elena and Caroline arrive at Salvatore house and Caroline goes into the library with Enzo to avoid the awkward situation between Elena and Damon. Caroline along with Enzo is shown to be eavesdropping the conversation between Damon and Elena.

In What Lies Beneath, Stefan and Elena try to hide from travelers and decide to go to Caroline's Father cabin, when they arrive to the cabin, they start to talk, Caroline receives to them telling them that they don't need invitation to enter now that Bill is dead, she suspects that Elena and Stefan are hiding something to her but Stefan hands Caroline a couple of bags to take inside, she's suspicious but laughs it off, Caroline takes the bags inside, she walks out onto the porch and observes them, eavesdropping. Caroline sees that Elena and Stefan are fiddling and she tells them that for a couple of doppel-targets, they seem to be taking this all in stride. Elena and Stefan carry supplies inside.

Caroline and Damon are talking, Caroline seems to be upset because she thinks that something is going on between Stefan and Elena again, then then Elena and Stefan enter to the cabin, they were getting firewood out of the shed together, they seem to be very suspicious and Stefan leaves, Elena immediately follows him, and then Damon speaks in a low voice to Caroline, telling her that's time to the games begin.

The night ends terribly with Jo nearly dying being she was linked to Kai's life and Liam finding out that Elena was a vampire. However, Caroline sadly watched Elena compel Liam to forget his feelings for her and to forget that she was a vampire in order to keep him safe.

In Christmas Through Your Eyes, although they don't spend Christmas together, Bonnie remembers a previous year when she spent an event related to Christmas with Caroline and Elena.

In Prayer For the Dying, when Caroline's plan to save her mother from dying from cancer, Elizabeth Forbes' cancer is only sped up, which complicates things for Caroline. Elena attempts to help Caroline, along with Stefan and Damon, by sticking with Liz in the hospital until Josette Laughlin, Alaric's witch fiancée, comes up with a solution to Liz's problem. However, since vampire blood is no cure for cancer, Caroline and Elena witness Kai Parker, Jo's psychotic twin brother who happened to be a siphoner, literally suck Caroline's vampire blood, being vampire blood is magic, out of Liz's system. Elena and Caroline are both relieved that Liz will live to see another day, but are still upset that Liz's death from cancer is inevitable.

In Stay, Caroline's mother enters a coma during her last hours combating cancer. Elena stays by Caroline and Liz's side in the hospital as Caroline is forced to say goodbye to her dying, comatose mother.

In Let Her Go, Caroline tasks her friends, including Elena, with preparations for Liz Forbes' funeral. Elena spends the day with her friends as they say goodbye to Caroline's mother. Both Caroline and Elena are upset as the funeral comes to a close. However, Elena notices that Caroline starts to act strange and eventually figures out that Caroline plans on switching off her humanity switch. Elena tries to convince Caroline that switching off her humanity was a bad idea and that it never solved anything, especially since Elena was forced to switch off her humanity and deal with the consequences of her actions when it came back on, back in Season Four. It appears Elena has gotten through to Caroline and they share a heartfelt hug in Caroline's vestibule. However, Caroline in tears says that switching off her humanity is her own decision to make and she snaps Elena's neck, knocking her out and switches off her humanity switch.

In The Downward Spiral, Elena is mad and afraid of the new Caroline after her friend switched off her humanity. However, Caroline surprises everyone when she shows a semi-logical side to her newfound personality. In revenge against Stefan for trying to switch on her humanity, Caroline learns of Sarah Nelson, his distant biological relative and she kidnaps her. Caroline threatens to kill Stefan's niece and Elena is forced to save Sarah's life from Liam Davis as Stefan desperately tries to get through to Caroline and her humanity. Elena is distraught and shocked when Stefan calls Elena and says that he is being forced to shut off his humanity switch, thanks to Caroline. Stefan asks Elena to bring him back before shutting his eyes as well as his humanity switch. Elena is now forced to deal with Caroline and Stefan shutting off their humanities.

In Because, Stefan's humanity is switched back on and Elena is asked to help him get through to Caroline's humanity. After pretending to still have his humanity switch off, Elena pretends to try and get through to Stefan and then attempts to get through to Caroline. However, Caroline insults Elena by calling her a hypocrite after her attempts to try and turn on her humanity. After Elena attempts to get through to Caroline by showing her a letter from Liz, Caroline snaps at Elena that she doesn't care and asks Stefan to burn the letter. After much hesitation, Stefan burns the letter and Elena screams 'no!' As it starts to burn. Later on, Damon and Elena attempt to get through to Caroline once again and Caroline in return insults their inability to have a normal life together as a normal couple, which upsets Elena and infuriates Damon.

In I'll Wed You in the Golden Summertime, while keeping busy by helping prepare for Alaric and Jo's wedding, Caroline makes amends with her friends and one of those friends is Elena. She apologizes to Elena for the things she said to her while her humanity was off and Elena immediately forgives her for it. Their friendship is now repaired as they help prepare for Alaric and Jo's wedding. However, during the wedding, Kai Parker and the newly-discovered vampire-witch hybrid-family that Lily Salvatore raised, show up and kill Jo and the rest of her Gemini Coven family, things take a turn for the worst as Elena is knocked out unconscious.

(Caroline continues to lower Elena down into the well. Elena finds Stefan, he's unconscious. She unhooks the chain from around herself and puts it around Stefan.)

Caroline: Elena, what's going on down there?

(Caroline reels Elena up. Bonnie helps Elena when she finally gets out of the well. Elena looks down at Stefan. She jumps off the well and down to him.)

Elena: Oh, god! Stefan!

(She cradles his head under her arm. Bonnie and Caroline rush over to her.)

Elena: Stefan! Stefan.

(Elena sees a rock nearby and grabs it. She cuts her hand with it. Caroline turns away. Elena places her wrist to Stefan's mouth. He opens his eyes and drinks from her.)

(Elena hands Caroline her drink.)

Elena: Thank you.

(Elena walks off and Caroline watches as she takes a sip of her drink.)

(Elena goes inside Damon's room)

Caroline: This room's off limits!

(Elena turns around and sees Caroline in the bathroom.)

Elena: Caroline?

Caroline: Sorry. (She's holding a bag of blood) I just needed to take a beat. (Puts the bag down and walks up to Elena) Are you hiding?

Elena: I was just looking for Damon.

Caroline: Well, he better be here somewhere because we haven't even done the cake yet.

Elena: I think i'm gonna pass on the whole cake thing.

Caroline: What? no, no way, no! It's your birthday! You know it's the dawn of a new day and, you can't get on with your life until you have made a wish and blown out the candles.

Elena: Is that what you all want me to do? Just get on with my life?

Caroline: No... Maybe... I just don't think anyone wants to see you like this.

Elena: I'm not gonna give up on finding Stefan, Caroline.

Caroline: Of course not. And you shouldn't, but you have to admit that you kinda just letting your life pass you by. And isn't Stefan the one who wanted to make sure that you lived it?

Elena: You want me to make a wish? I just wanna know that he's alive. That's it! That's my wish.

(She starts to walk away, but she sees Damon's closet door is open a little bit and goes up to it and opens it)

Caroline: I'm sorry, okay. I'm just drunk and dumb tonight. Wait, what are you doing..,?

(She sees all the notes and maps and articles that Damon has used to search for Klaus and Stefan. Caroline comes up to her too)

Caroline: What's all that?

Elena: It's Klaus. Damon's been tracking him without me.

Caroline: Why wouldn't he just tell you?

Elena: I don't know.

Caroline: I come bearing gifts!

Elena: Please say that's not chili...

Caroline: Ahh! Did I splash you?

Elena: No, no, my necklace.

(Elena and Caroline are talking)

Caroline: Did Stefan ever tell you where he got the necklace?

Elena: No. And I never asked. Hopefully Bonnie will be able to figure it out.

(Elena and Alaric turn around to look at Bill)

Elena: Why would he even show up here?

Caroline: I don't know. But I can't...

Elena: I get it. I'll call you later.

(Caroline leaves and goes upstairs)

Caroline: I'm only answering in case it's a friend emergency.

Elena: It's an emergency.

(Caroline puts a flyer for the bonfire on the wall)

Elena: I forgot about the bonfire.

Caroline: You have to go. It's our first spirit squad event. And it sets the bar for the whole year.

Elena: Relax, Caroline. I'll be there.

Caroline: Thank you. It's just that...

(Tyler arrives and kisses Caroline. Elena looks at his shirt and sees something red)

Tyler: Happy first day!

Elena: Is that blood?

Caroline: Oh my God!

(Caroline, catches Tyler and Elena follows them)

(Elena is in the restrooms with Jeremy and Anna. She's on the phone with Caroline)

Elena: How do we do that?

Caroline: Apparently the old witch can draw power from this side because of her talisman.

Elena: Talisman... My necklace?

Caroline: It's some ju-ju power source. And I know you're not going to like this, but Bonnie needs to destroy it.

Elena: I just walked in on Jeremy kissing the reason I'm completely ok with that.

Caroline: What?! Are you kidding?

Elena: I wish. Look, I don't have the necklace. Damon has it somewhere. Text him. I'll call you right back.

(She hangs up and looks at Anna)

(Elena's phone rings. She goes outside the cell)

Elena: Hello?

Caroline: So the necklace isn't where Damon said it would be and now we can't reach Damon.

Elena: Listen, I need you to get Bonnie to hold off on sending the ghosts back.

Caroline: What?! But you said you were in full support of getting rid of them.

Elena: I was. I am. Look, Lexi's here and she's helping with Stefan.

Caroline: Ok, let's just find it first and then we'll choose between boyfriend ghost dramas.

(Elena is at the Salvatore home on the phone with Caroline)

Elena: So, does that mean I don't have to go?

Caroline: You wish! No, Tyler is moving the party to his house.

Elena: Kegs and beerpong for Homecoming? That's- different...

Caroline: Just say you're still coming?!

(Someone is knocking on the front door.)

Caroline: Yeah, and now, it's just a reminder that technically, I'm dead. [beat] Look, I didn't even like 17. And the only point to being 17 is to get to 18. It's a filler year; I'm stuck in a filler year.

Elena: You're not stuck, Caroline.

Caroline: Yeah I am, but it's okay. You know, it's all good, I'll be fine. But I just need some time to wallow in it.

Elena: Okay, well I think I have another idea.

(Meredith meets up with Caroline in the hospital.)

Elena: That was fast.

Caroline: Yeah, he's not here. He was already discharged. And she seems perfectly nice by the way... a little intense, maybe. But... I think it's sweet, you wanna make sure Alaric's not dating a total psycho.

Elena: He's my family. I have to look out for him. What?

(Caroline calls her father)

Caroline: I hear it.

(She hears her phone of her dad.)

Elena: Hear what?

Caroline: My dad's phone.

(They go in a storage room.)

(They find Bill lifeless with a knife in his chest.)

(Caroline gets on her knees beside him.)

Caroline: Dad! Dad?

Elena: Oh my god.

Caroline: Don't be dead, don't be dead, don't be dead! Oh my god!

(She pulls the knife out.)

Caroline: Daddy!

Elena: Caroline... He has vampire blood in his system.

Caroline: What?!

(Suddenly, Bill wakes up.)

(Elena and Caroline are sitting together on the front porch.)

Elena: Did you hear back from Tyler yet?

Caroline: No. And I've left messages for him everywhere. So, does Alaric really think that Dr. Fell did it?

Elena: He doesn't know what to think.

Caroline: What about you?

Elena: I wish the girl Alaric liked wasn't in the middle of all of this. He deserves to be happy. But yeah, she looks guilty. It's why I told your mom.

Caroline: My mom's in there sitting with my dad. And I don't think they've been in the same room this long since I was ten years old. Is there any chance that Tyler did it?

Elena: What?

Caroline: If Klaus was trying to mess with you and he's sired to Klaus. And, I mean, he does everything that he's told.

Elena: No.... no, I don't think Tyler did it.

Caroline: I can't just let my father die. You know, I'm... I'm gonna force him to feed.

Elena: Hey.... he doesn't want to, Caroline. The only thing your dad has is his choice.

(Caroline starts to cry.)

Caroline: I hated him so much for what he did to me. So much. Now all I want to do is save his life.

Elena: Of course you do, he's your dad.

Caroline: What was the hardest part for you? When you lost your Dad?

Elena: Realizing all the things that he wouldn't be there for. The things that.... that you just need your Dad for, you know?

(Elena scoots over to Caroline and holds her in her arms. Matt suddenly shows up and they both look at him.)

Matt: Hey.

Caroline: Hey.

(She gets up and hugs Matt.)

Caroline: It's some twisted Cinderella fetish is what it is. And why does the Evil Witch want an audience with you?

Elena: I have no idea. There's only one way to find out.

Caroline: I thought you told Damon and Stefan that you weren't going.

Elena: I did, which is all the more reason why I need a drama free bodyguard.

Caroline: Well, I think a Salvatore would look a lot better in a tux. And by that I mean Stefan.

Elena: Uhh, I can't deal with either of the Salvatores right now. Whatever Stefan is feeling, he is channeling it all against Klaus. And Damon...it's just not a good idea.

Caroline: Why, cause you two made out? Bonnie spilled the beans.

Elena: I was gonna tell you. Just, after everything happened with your dad....

Caroline: Elena, when you and Matt kissed for the first time freshman year, you called me the second it happened. And now I don't hear about this til now, and from somebody else.

Elena: I'm sorry. It's just I, I don't even know how I feel about it yet. All I do know is that it just used to be so much easier.

(Rebekah walks away and gives Matt an invitation to the ball)

Caroline: Oh my god. She's inviting him to the ball. Why is she inviting him?

Elena: Probably to get this reaction from us.

Caroline: What time is this stupid dance?

Caroline (To Bonnie and Elena): It's not working. I can hear every word you're saying about Damon, the vampire gigolo.

Caroline (To Bonnie and Elena): Okay. First of all, this privacy spell is totally not working. Second. Elena, you are not doing this, Esther is doing this.

(Caroline walks away and answers her phone.)

Caroline: Hey, what's going on?

Elena: Bonnie's not returning any of my calls.

Caroline: Sorry, she's still mad and seriously Abby's transition has been a little rough, so she's got a lot on her mind.

Elena: I know and I get it but, something really terrible has happened to Ric and… and I really need her help.

(Caroline and Elena are walking through the woods.)

Caroline: Alaric Saltzman killed my father?

Elena: I can't expect you to be okay with this. But at least these herbs that Bonnie's giving him, they're healing him and they're keeping the dark side buried.

Caroline: Yeah, and that's supposed to make everything okay?

(Elena grabs Caroline's arm and Caroline faces her. Caroline is teary eyed.)

Elena: No, Caroline, it's not okay. It's horrible and I feel horrible about it, but he's a victim of something supernatural, he didn't ask for this, it just happened to him. Just like Bonnie's mom, I mean, she didn't ask to become a vampire. And neither did Stefan or Tyler.

Caroline: Or me.

Elena: Or you. None of you asked for this, but who would I be if I just turned my back on any of you?

(Caroline moves to Elena's side and wraps her arm around her shoulders. They start to walk off.)

Caroline: Oh, Elena Gilbert, savior of the cursed and the damned.

(Caroline and Elena are walking through the gym hall which is being decorated for the 20s decade dance. Caroline has a clipboard and is in charge of the preparations as Rebekah is missing)

Caroline: So, Alaric is trying to pull himself together, why is that a bad thing?

Elena: I just - I wish there was something I could do.

(Elena picks up a chandelier)

Elena: Where do you want me to hang this thing?

Caroline: You know what, if Rebekah wanted to hang this monstrosity she should have shown up to do it herself. (hands the chandelier to a passerby student) Just no!

(Caroline sees Matt and Jeremy hanging up stars in the ceiling)

Caroline: What are you doing? You can't just hang them! They're supposed to trickle down.

Matt: Trickle, duh!

Caroline: Look at them all bromancy.

Elena: Yeah I asked Matt to help Jeremy readjust. He got him his old job back at the grill.

Caroline: That was nice of him.

Elena: Jeremy has got a lot on his mind. The whole thing with Alaric has got him really stressed out.

Caroline: You sure it has nothing to do with witnessing you and Damon getting hot and heavy in a skeevy motel?

Elena: I didn't tell you that so you could torture me with it.

Caroline: Aww, what are friends for? So who are you bringing to the dance?

Elena: What do you mean? I thought you, Bonnie and I were going as girl dates.

Caroline: Hm, Bonnie has a date.

Elena: What?

Caroline: Jamie called and wanted to see her so she asked him.

Elena: Hmm.

Caroline: So here's a thought, why don't you ask Stefan?

Elena: I can't ask him on a date, I just made out with his brother.

Caroline: All the more reason! Look you're supposed to be figuring out what you want, that's what Stefan wanted you to do, right?

Elena: Yeah, but...

Caroline: But nothing! I've watched The Bachelor, okay? Fair is fair. It is Stefan's turn.

Elena: Yeah and you're not biased or anything.

Caroline: I'm sorry, but Stefan is your epic love. And I'm not going down without a fight.

Caroline: I heard. And you know that sooner or later, you're gonna have to choose, right?

Elena: I know.

(Tyler and Matt open the front door; Caroline walks in behind them with her arm wrapped around Elena, helping her into the house.)

Caroline: Couch.

Elena: I'm fine. I just… I want something to eat first.

Tyler: We're on it, as soon as we make sure no one is lurking in the closets.

(Tyler and Matt walk upstairs. Caroline leads Elena to the couch.)

Caroline: Alright, couch, now!

Elena: Uhh, I told you I'm fine.

(Caroline grabs a blanket off a chair and follows Elena.)

Caroline: Doctor says rest, you rest.

(Elena sits down on the couch and Caroline covers her with the blanket.)

Caroline: Now, what can I get you? Do you want some tea, maybe some vodka? Both will help you sleep.

Elena: It's not like I don't love Stefan anymore, but I can't deny that ever since I turned, my feelings for Damon have become more intense.

Caroline: Yeah, I know. Stefan filled me in on all the gory Damon details.

Elena: He did?

(Elena looks at her for a second, clearly worried.)

Elena: Is he okay?

Caroline: No, he's heartbroken.

Elena: Well, what was I supposed to do? Lie to him?

Caroline: No, but you weren't supposed to let Damon weasel his way into your confused newbie vampire heart.

Elena: Well, he did and that's exactly what I am. Confused. I need to figure out what these feelings actually mean.

(Professor Shane walks down the steps and over to Caroline and Elena.)

Shane: Excuse me, I'm a little lost. I'm here to interview contestants.

Elena: You're Professor Shane.

(Elena and Caroline look at each other.)

Shane: Yeah, that's right. Professor by day; pageant judge by other day. In spite of being absurdly unqualified, I'm apparently awarding a scholarship.

Caroline: Uh, inside by the parlor.

(Shane points up towards the house.)

Shane: Right in here?

Caroline: Mhm.

Shane: Alright, I'll just follow the scent of hairspray and world domination.

(Caroline laughs quietly. Shane walks away. Elena turns and looks at Caroline.)

Elena: He's the one who told Damon how to break the hunter's curse.

Caroline: He's also the one that has Bonnie so obsessed with practicing magic that she bailed on pageant prep.

Elena: And now he's judging Miss Mystic Falls?

(Caroline raises her eyebrows.)

Caroline: Uh, what happened to thirty seconds ago when you hated the red one? What happened to safe is good?

Elena: Whichever one you want to wear, April.

(Elena walks out of the room. Caroline watches her leave and turns around, confused.)

Caroline: What just happened?

Elena: Matt said that Jeremy's been having nightmares about killing vampires and he's been hiding it from me.

(Caroline looks surprised and worried. Damon shrugs it off.)

Caroline: Okay, you go home, I'm gonna start asking around here.

Elena: Maybe Damon's right. Maybe he grabbed a bottle from the bar and snuck off to the woods.

Caroline: No, Damon is never right. Damon is sneaky and manipulative and rude, but he's never right. How can you not see that?

Elena: I don't know, but why do I think that you won't hesitate to tell me?

Caroline: Fine, friend-tervention. I think your so called "feelings" for Damon are really starting to cloud your judgment and I don't like it.

(Klaus walks over to them and stands next to Caroline.)

Caroline: And the thought of you two together really makes me want to barf.

Klaus: Easy, love, you're making a scene.

Elena: Wow, Caroline, thank you for making this very difficult time so much easier.

(Elena walks away. Caroline stands there with a blank look on her face.)

Caroline: But are you? I mean, clearly, they don't have a flat iron at hotel Salvatore.

Elena: Oh -- I was in a rush. I mean -- look, do you girls have any plans.

Elena: So, what exactly was it about him that made you jump right into bed with him as soon as you met him? (About Damon)

Caroline: I didn't know what a sociopathic narcissist he was.

Elena: He's always been there for me when I needed him.

Caroline: Yeah, because he's hoping you'll sleep with him.

Elena: Well, maybe I did.

Elena: Do you think it makes me happy that you guys hate him? I get it. His track record has been kind of spotty but I don't hate him. I can't. He's - I think I'm falling in love with him.

Caroline: Ugh, you're not falling in love with him, Elena. You're sired to him.

(Elena walks down the stairs towards the door as Caroline enters the house. They look at each other for a moment and then Caroline hugs Elena tightly.)

Caroline: I'm sorry.

(There is a moment of silence between them as Caroline holds on to Elena.)

Caroline: Ok, if you don't start hugging me back this is gonna get really awkward really fast.

Elena: You've got my hands pinned down.

Caroline: Oh.

(She takes her arms away from around Elena for a second, then wraps them around her again. Elena wraps her arms around Caroline as well and they embrace.)

Caroline: I'm a jerk. I promise to never again judge ever.

Elena: Just please don't tell Stefan about me and Damon.

(They stop hugging each other and look at each other.)

Elena: I promise that I'll tell him. I just - I need to figure out some stuff first.

Caroline: Of course.

(Caroline rubs Elena's arm. Bonnie walks in from behind Elena.)

Bonnie: You guys friends again? Thank God.

Caroline: Well, she saved my life. In spite of me being the nasty, bad witch.

Elena: Thankfully we had our good witch. You know, your hottie creepy Professor really knows his stuff, Bonnie.

Bonnie: It's been baby steps but he's helping with a whole new kind of magic. He calls it expression.

(Elena, Stefan, and Rebekah are on the beach. Elena is on the phone with Caroline.)

Caroline: [over the phone] Tell me you're not serious.

Elena: I wish I weren't.

(Cut to the Gilbert house, where Caroline is on the phone while Klaus remains trapped in the living room. The shots alternate between Caroline in the Gilbert house and Elena on the island throughout their conversation.]

Elena: When we got back from looking for Jeremy, Shane and Bonnie were gone too. Shane needs Bonnie to cast a spell on Jeremy's tattoo in order to find the cure, and he managed to sneak them both out from under our noses.

Caroline: Well, where's Damon in all this?

Elena: We had an argument. [on the beach] I thought he was just taking a walk, but then when we went to the beach, we saw signs of a struggle.

Caroline: Meaning what?

Elena: Meaning somebody probably jumped him and then grabbed him!

Caroline: Do you think Shane took him?

Elena: No, I mean, he's not strong enough to take Damon on, even with the element of surprise. He must have someone, or at least a few someones helping him.

Caroline: I'm so sorry. I wish I was there to help.

Elena: Well, maybe there's something you can do from home.

Caroline: Anything. Tell me.

Elena: So Shane's looking for the cure. We think we can find him. We have pictures of Jeremy's tattoo, but we just can't translate the map.

Caroline: Unless you get the Hunter's Sword from Klaus.

Elena: [over the phone] Exactly.

Rebekah: He'll never give up the sword.

Stefan: Yeah, but if anyone's gonna get him to give it up, it's Caroline.

Rebekah: He will never give up the sword, not even for Caroline. He's terrified we'll use the cure against him to make him mortal, and even if he wasn't, he wouldn't want any of us to derive a moment's worth of happiness from being human.

Stefan: Well, maybe he doesn't have to give it up. I mean, Klaus is stuck in Elena's house by Bonnie's spell. He can't go anywhere. There's only so many places you can hide a three-foot piece of metal.

Caroline: I'll find it, don't worry. Just e-mail me photos of Jeremy's tattoo. I'll find the sword, and I'll call you back.

Elena: Thank you, Caroline.

Caroline: Bye.

Caroline (To Elena): Hey, you're home. I was trying to clean the burn mark where Kol... (She sees Stefan carrying Jeremy, his body wrapped in a blanket) I couldn't get the spot out.

Elena (To Caroline): It's possible, Caroline. There's a chance. It may be miniscule, but it's hope and I'm gonna hold on to that hope with everything that I've got because there's no way that m... There's absolutely no way that my brother is dead... I'm not in denial.

Caroline: Elena, stop it. You're scaring me!

Elena: What else are we supposed to do with the body, Caroline? I mean, there's no... there's no room in the Gilbert family plot. [throws the frame down on the floor and the glass cracks] Jenna and-- and John took the last spots.

Elena: I have an idea. (approaching them, holding up a flyer) Can you get me my old spot back on the cheerleading squad?

Caroline: I mean, technically, yeah. I'm captain, but I thought you hated cheerleading.

Elena: I did, but now I think it would be really fun to jump around and toss people up in the air. It's not like the routines are that hard.

Caroline: I... think that would make Damon really happy.

(The cheerleading invitational is underway as Elena, in her cheer uniform, observes the crowds. Inside, Caroline approaches her cheerfully.)

Caroline: The uniform still fits. You look fantastic. (Elena twirls to show off her uniform) We are totally gonna kick Grove Hills' ass.

Elena: Yeah. Should be fun.

Caroline: Wow. The competition's bigger than last year.

Caroline: I'm gonna go stretch.

Caroline: Hey, where were you? We're going on any minute.

Elena: I'm here, aren't I?

Caroline: What's with the ribbon? That's not even our colors.

(Elena simply gives her a cute sly smile, twirls her ponytail, and walks away while Caroline watches her uneasily. She then catches sight of the girl Elena fed on; she now has a scarf tied around her neck and is pulling at it uncomfortably. Upset, Caroline catches up to Elena.)

Caroline: Are you out of your mind?

Elena: What is your problem?

Caroline Forbes: Feeding on the competition? Hello. Did you not hear what Damon told you?

Elena: I did, but who cares? I'll do whatever I want.

Stefan: (approaching them) Everything all right?

Elena: Yeah, as soon as the queen backs off, everything will be fine.

(Elena walks off to warm up with the other Mystic Falls cheerleaders while Caroline and Stefan watch her carefully.)

Caroline: Remember how Damon sired her to behave? It didn't really work.

Caroline: No way. You are not cheering.

Elena: Let's see you try and stop me.

(Elena is still dancing on a table, pouring alcohol into someone's mouth. Stefan and Caroline are dancing together, laughing and talking. Elena sees them enjoying themselves, jumps down from the table and approaches them.)

Elena: Look who finally joined the party.

Stefan: Yeah. Why? Are you jealous or something?

Elena: No. That would imply emotions, and we've already established those are useless.

Caroline: Come on, Elena. Just dance with us.

Elena: No. You guys look good together. (smiling) By all means, Care, just take him out for a spin. He could use it.

Caroline: Elena! Don't make me fight you, Elena! I'm stronger than you, and I don't want to hurt you.

(Elena vamp-speeds into the clearing, throws Caroline against a tree then throws her down onto the ground.)

Elena: (on top of Caroline, holding her down at the throat) Who's gonna get hurt?

(Caroline throws Elena off and they both stand up, facing each other.)

Elena: Not bad. Not technically good, but then again, Alaric didn't train you. You were probably too busy butting into people's business!

(Elena swings her leg up to kick Caroline but Caroline dodges her. Caroline tries to grab her but Elena grabs Caroline's throat. Caroline tries to loosen Elena's grip but then Elena headbutts her.)

Caroline: (putting a hand to her forehead) Oh, just stop! God. This isn't you, and you know it! You hurt my mom, Elena. How far are you gonna take this?

Elena: Are you trying to make me feel bad for hurting your mom? Don't you get it? I don't care. I mean, maybe you should try to turn it all off. Who knows? You might stop whining about how Tyler left you. Added bonus: you won't have to feel guilty about all the dirty thoughts you have about Klaus.

Caroline: Shut up.

Elena: Make me.

(Caroline strikes Elena and they engage in hand-to-hand combat.)

Elena: (holding Caroline's fist) You fight like a girl.

(Elena breaks Caroline's arm, snaps a small branch off of a nearby tree and stabs her in the stomach with it. Caroline falls to her knees, Elena pulls the branch out of Caroline and is about to stake her through the back when Stefan vamp-speeds into the clearing with Damon and restrains her.)

Elena: Hey Bonnie, heard you got your mind wiped. That sucks. Pretty dress, Caroline.

Caroline: I know, you helped me pick it out months ago. When we were friends. Before you tried to kill me.

Elena: I thought it looked familiar.

Caroline (to store employee): Can you press this for me? I'll pick it up later. Bonnie?

(Caroline finally arrives at the dance, smiling to see her classmates enjoying themselves. Elena approaches her.)

Elena: So how do I look?

Caroline: Are you kidding me? You look like a back-stabbing bi...

(She stops when she sees Stefan approaching behind Elena. Caroline continues with less fervor.)

Caroline: The dress is beautiful, and it brings out your eyes.

Elena: Thanks. I thought I'd do it a favor.

(Caroline starts to retort but Stefan intercedes.)

Stefan: Caroline, why don't you come dance with me, hm?

(Caroline takes his hand and they move to the dance floor, leaving Elena looking rather smug.)

Caroline: I know you said to kill her with kindness, but can't I just kill her?

Caroline: I brought you something. It doesn't have any vervain in it, I swear. I just figured a little blood might help you think straight.

(She approaches Elena, holding out the bottle after she opens it. Elena pauses for a moment before seizing on the bottle and drinking it desperately.)

Caroline: For the record, I don't agree with what they're doing. I mean, I agree that you need to turn your humanity back on, but I don't think that making you suffer is the way to do it. That's not who you are.

(Elena spins the empty bottle on the stone floor.)

Elena: What makes you such an expert on who I am?

Caroline: Because we've been friends forever.

Elena: I tried to kill you, Caroline. I'm not exactly BFF-material anymore. You should move on.

(Elena continues to spin the bottle on the floor until Caroline reaches out suddenly and stills it.)

Caroline: I am not going to give up on you.

Elena: This annoying, clingy thing that you're doing-- did it ever occur to you maybe that's why both your boyfriends skipped town? I mean, I know that Tyler said he was running for his life, but maybe he was running from you. And Klaus? I mean, let's just say it: nobody likes a tease. Hey, I'm not judging. Might be nice to have a bad boy ruffle those perfect feathers.

(Caroline tries to keep it together.)

Caroline: You're in pain, you're lashing out, I get it. But you can't stay this way forever. We're about to graduate, and start new lives! And you deserve--

Elena: Are you seriously talking about high school graduation? Caroline, do you realize how pathetic you're gonna look in that cap and gown, pretending to be human while your mom fake-smiles and just counts down the minutes until you leave town so that you can stop being a reminder that her daughter is a repulsive, blood-sucking control freak monster?

(Caroline, losing her patience, stands up and turns away.)

Elena: It's really too bad Stefan stopped me before I put you out of your misery, but hey, here's to second chances.

(Elena vamp-speeds over to Caroline to attack her. Caroline holds her off while Elena growls, teeth bared.)

Caroline: Elena.

(Elena doesn't let up, so Caroline snaps her neck. Elena falls to the floor. Stefan returns, standing behind Caroline. She speaks without looking at him.)

Caroline: Do whatever you have to do. (She turns and looks at him.) I'm gonna be upstairs.

(She walks past Stefan and leaves.)

- She's Come Undone

(Outside of the Grill, Caroline and Elena are working on their graduation letters.)

Caroline: Stamp, please.

(Elena tears off a stamp and hands it to Caroline.)

Caroline: Thank you.

Elena: You don't have to pretend to be nice to me, Caroline. I know this is just a ploy to keep me distracted.

(Elena sighs heavily. Caroline looks at Elena's stack of graduation letters.)

Caroline: You're done? I'm only on my second batch.

Elena: [holding up her single letter] We have family friends in Denver. Other than that, no one cares that I'm graduating and, to be honest, neither do I.

Caroline: I know that's how you feel now, but once you get through this hating Katherine phase.

Elena: Wait, do you know where Katherine is?

Caroline: No. Why would I know where she is?

Elena: Yeah, but, Caroline, if you did, you would tell me, right?

Caroline: Elena, you're obsessing.

(Elena grabs Caroline's hand with ferocity.)

Elena: Caroline, listen to me, if you know where Katherine is then you have to tell me.

(Caroline pulls her hand out of Elena's.)

Caroline: I don't, Elena. Chill.

Caroline: What about us? Are we still friends? All those things you said when your humanity was off - is that how you really feel?

Elena: Caroline, I really don't feel like going down memory lane.

(Elena walks back to line up her next throw.)

Caroline: Well, what about when you said, and I quote, "You're a repulsive, bloodsucking control-freak monster"? Did you really mean those things?

(Elena hesitates over her next throw, then gives it up and looks at Caroline.)

Elena: Assuming he registers. And picks a dorm. And buys books.

(Elena puts on earrings while watching herself in the mirror, seeming lost in thought until Caroline loudly shuts a drawer and Elena snaps out of it. The shower can be heard running in the background.)

Caroline: Did you notice how Megan's juicer takes up all the small appliance space? She has an entire drawer dedicated to organic linen.

Elena: What happened to privacy?

Caroline: Maybe if she didn't take such long showers, I wouldn't have time to go through her stuff. How are you okay with a third roommate?

Elena: Because we're trying to be functional, and being functional means we need friends.

Caroline: We also need personal space. I mean, what if we suddenly get a craving, and I want to eat her? Or our blood bags go bad because we can't store them in the mini-fridge? Ugh, and what the hell is protein water?

(Caroline pulls out the bottle in question, and Elena shrugs.)

Caroline: You know what, maybe if I drink it all, she'll wanna move out.

(Caroline opens the bottle and takes a sip.)

Elena: Caroline, no–

(Suddenly Caroline coughs up the water as it sizzles in her mouth, collapsing to the floor.)

Caroline: Vervain.

(The door to the bathroom opens and Megan appears, wrapped in a towel.)

Megan: What's going on? Are you okay?

(Caroline straightens up as Megan walks over with a clean towel to give her.)

Elena: Yeah, she's, uh, she's fine.

Megan: What happened?

Caroline: (haltingly) Water just went down the wrong pipe. I'm okay, really. I shouldn't have touched your stuff, I'm really sorry.

Megan: It's fine. It just sounded like someone was dying out here. Well, I'm glad you're okay!

(Megan returns to the bathroom, shutting the door.)

Caroline: She knows who we are – she drinks vervain water!

Elena: It doesn't mean she knows about us.

Caroline: Seriously? We share a bathroom with this girl! What if she's a hunter, and she stakes us when we're in the shower? Or she steals our daylight rings while we're asleep and then we burst into flames when the sun comes up?!

Elena: Don't you think that, if she was a hunter, we'd be dead by now?

Caroline: I think we should lock her up. You know, let the vervain get out of her system, and then we compel her to forget about us.

Elena: Caroline, I'm not kidnapping our roommate! The best way to convince her that we're normal, is to act normal. And do normal, human, freshman-y stuff.

Caroline: Such as?

(A grin spreads across Elena's face and she moves her shoulders like she's dancing.)

(The party is well underway when Jesse, the flyer guy, approaches Caroline and Elena.)

Jesse: Hey, I remember you.

Elena: Hey. Flyer Guy.

Jesse: Jesse, technically, but 'Flyer Guy' works, too.

Elena: I'm Elena, this is Caroline.

Jesse: Nice to meet you.

Caroline: Hi.

(Caroline smiles and turns away without another word. Elena looks at Jesse apologetically and follows Caroline.)

Elena: You can't be nice to the guy?

Caroline: I'm with Tyler.

Elena: Are you? Because he hasn't called.

Caroline: From the mountains of Appalachia?

Elena: I'm just saying, I don't want you to get your hopes up thinking that he's coming, when he hasn't really shown much interest.

Caroline: Did you tell Damon you were having dreams about Stefan?

(Elena doesn't respond.)

Caroline: See? No relationship is perfect.

(They stop suddenly at the entrance to the house, unable to go any further.)

Caroline: What the hell?

Elena: Someone must own this place. We have to be invited in.

Megan: Hey! I was wondering if you guys were gonna make it.

(Elena and Caroline stand awkwardly in the doorway when Jesse catches up with them.)

Jesse: You guys going in, or...?

Elena: Go ahead.

(Jesse walks around them into the house.)

Megan: Why are you guys just standing there?

Elena: We were just... Caroline?

Caroline: Waiting for someone.

Elena: She's late.

Caroline: So.

Megan: Right. Well, I'm gonna go hang.

(Megan goes back into the house, and Elena and Caroline drop their too-bright smiles.)

Caroline: Like I said, she knows.

(Elena and Caroline hover on the edge of the party outside while Elena leaves a voicemail.)

Elena: Hey, Megan, it's Elena. Just calling to let you know why we left, so call me when you get this. Bye.

Caroline: Okay, it's settled. When she leaves, we grab her.

Elena: Or we could just let her know you weren't feeling well.

Caroline: Elena, she saw us stuck at the threshold, we might as well have flashed her our fangs.

Elena: There's no way that out of the thousands of freshmen, we were randomly paired with someone who knows about vampires.

Caroline: Maybe it wasn't random.

(Elena's phone rings.)

Elena: Megan's calling. Hey, Megan.

Megan: (voiceover) Elena! You have to help me! He's chasing me!

(Alarmed at the panic in Megan's voice, Elena puts the phone on speaker as Caroline leans closer.)

Elena: Megan, who's chasing you?

Megan: Help me! Oh, my god!

(They look up at the upper storey of the house, but don't see anything unusual.)

Elena: We can't come inside – the line's too long. If you come out – where are you?

Megan: Elena, please help me!

(Caroline takes the phone as Megan starts screaming over the phone.)

Caroline: Megan, can you hear me? Get outside and we can help you.

(Suddenly something falls to the ground beside them, and they whirl around toward it.)

Elena: Oh, my god!

(It's Megan. Elena crouches down beside her. Her neck is ripped open.)

Caroline: Who did this to her?

Elena: This was a vampire.

(Officials surround Megan's body and cover it up while Elena and Caroline observe from a short distance away.)

Elena: What is happening? Our roommate is dead, there was a vampire at the party...

Caroline: We don't know what she knew or who she told. We should get out of here.

Elena: (realizing) Caroline, I left that message in her voicemail!

Caroline: Don't worry, I took her phone.

Elena: What?

(Caroline listens to Elena's voicemail on Megan's phone.)

Caroline: Delete.

(She hits the necessary button. She and Elena arrive at the door to their room, which is ajar. Elena cautiously pushes the door open.)

Elena: Someone's been in here.

Caroline: Megan's tablet's gone.

Elena: Along with her so-called suicide note. Can I see the phone for a second?

(Caroline hands it over and Elena looks through the photos in it.)

Caroline: It just doesn't make any sense. First, the roommate we're not supposed to have might know about vampires, and then happens to be killed by a vampire, and now the school's covering it up? Seriously, who is this girl?

Elena: Whatever's going on, it's not just about our roommate. It's about me.

(She holds up the phone to show Caroline a photo.)

Elena: That's Megan – with my dad.

(Caroline listens to a voicemail from Tyler. The message ends and Caroline hangs up. Elena, awake, listens to Caroline start to cry.)

Elena: You okay?

Caroline: Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine.

(Elena turns in bed to face Caroline.)

Elena: I'm sorry, Caroline.

(Caroline turns toward Elena.)

Caroline: I'm really glad that you're here.

Elena: I'm really glad you're here, too.

(They each turn back to go back to sleep, though Elena looks pensive.)

-- I Know What You Did Last Summer

(Students lay flowers at a memorial for Megan. Elena enters her dorm room to find Caroline rifling through the contents of a cardboard box.)

Elena: Megan's memorial outside is growing by the minute.

Caroline: Ugh, college kids are so dramatic. She was on campus for, like, one day. She couldn't have made that many friends.

Elena: Caroline, she's dead. You can stop competing with her.

Caroline: Sorry, I'm in a mood.

Elena: You talked to Tyler?

Caroline: He's deferring from enrolling and deferring from returning my phone calls, so I'm deferring from having sex with him ever again.

Elena: How's the snooping going? Any explanation why our vervain-laced, (looks back to check for eavesdroppers) vampire-slaughtered roommate had a picture of my dad on her phone?

Caroline: No.

(Elena suddenly remembers something, and hands a folder to Caroline.)

Elena: Oh, um, I went by the hospital this morning—Megan's death certificate. It says she died of suicide. No mention of the gaping vampire-bites on her neck. So, whoever signed off on the cause of death was part of the cover-up—just like the Founder's Council back home.

Caroline: Dr. Wesley Maxfield.

Elena: A.K.A., our Applied Microbiology professor. I switched our classes around, so that we could...

Caroline: Applied—what, what? Uh, Elena, we are supposed to be taking Intro. to Communication. What happened to getting drunk and making bad decisions about boys? What happened to our fun freshman year at college? I am supposed to be a drama major!

Elena: You're not going to be an Anything major if we get exposed as vampires!

(Elena stops, realizing her voice had been rising. Both she and Caroline take a deep breath, and Elena smiles.)

Elena: We are still gonna have our fun year, Caroline, but we have to protect ourselves. The way Damon kept his secret in Mystic Falls was because he infiltrated the Founder's Council. So, bust out those alleged acting skills, and let's get on it, okay?

(Elena smiles at her, and finally Caroline relaxes and smiles back.)

Elena: (About Jesse) What? You said you wanted to make bad decisions about boys. He's cute, he's interested, and most importantly, unlike Tyler, he's here.

(About Dr. Maxfield)

Caroline: Creep-y.

Elena: But hott-ie.

(Elena drops the matchbook in relief. Caroline opens the door and sees Damon tied to his chair, Elena impaled to hers.)

Caroline: I think we need to set some ground rules for when boyfriends come to visit.

(Elena loads a suitcase into the trunk of Damon's car. Caroline helps her.)

Elena: I'll be back, roomie. I don't know when, but I will be back.

Caroline: Just call me the minute you hear from Bonnie, okay? I've left her, like, a hundred messages.

Elena: I will, I promise

(They hug.)

Caroline: You're gonna find him, Elena.

Elena: Yeah, I know.

Caroline: Bye.

Elena: Bye.

-- True Lies

(The scene alternates between Elena at the Salvatore Mansion and Caroline at college. They are talking over the phone.)

Elena: Please tell me I wasn't out of my mind leaving Damon in charge of Vampire Amnesia 101.

Caroline: What did he say exactly?

Elena: One text -- "So far, so good." Which in Damon speak...

Caroline: Means that they probably devoured a troop of Girls Scouts by now.

Elena: Caroline!

Caroline: I'm kidding... kind of. Although it's not uncommon for patients with retrograde amnesia or other traumatic brain injuries to turn volatile.

Elena: Ok, Dr. Forbes. Since when do you know so much about amnesia?

Caroline: It's possible I studied up on my chem, biochem, applied microbio, molecular bio, and 'Gray's Anatomy," the real one and the television show.

Elena: You did all that for Stefan?

Caroline: Of course I did. I'm also trying to impress Dr. Maxfield. I figured if I could get closer to him, i.e. into his biology class, maybe I could figure out why he covered up our roommate's murder by vampire, and it's also possible that I have a study buddy.

(Caroline enters a classroom. She puts her phone on her shoulder.)

Caroline: Hi, Dr. Maxfield. Are you ready to go study, Jesse? (She returns her phone to her ear.)

Elena: Jesse? Dr. Maxfield's incredibly hot, funny, and miraculously single lab assistant?

Caroline: I'm dragging him to our hometown graveyard bell-ringing ceremony.

Elena: As in creepy first date?

Caroline: As in a study date. While I'm there, I might as well ring a bell for Tyler and me considering our relationship is on its death bed.

Jesse: See you Monday, Doc.

Dr. Maxfield: Stay out of trouble.

Caroline: (To Elena) Will I see you there? You could bring Stefan. I mean, it is ironically called Remembrance Day.

Elena: I hope so, I really do. It just depends on how Stefan's handling the whole download of his dark and stormy past.

Caroline: (To Jesse, whispers) Hi. (To Elena) All right. Well, I'll talk to you later.

-- For Whom the Bell Tolls

Elena: I.. uh..handed out all of the flyers. Oh, and Damon said he was going to try to bring Stefan.

Caroline: Funny. That sentiment implies that Damon is actually coming.

(Caroline's phone rings. Elena picks it up.)

Elena: hmmm. Maybe a call from a mysteriously hot biology TA will help?

(She hands the phone to Caroline, who proceeds to answer it.)

Elena: (glancing over at an unconscious Aaron): How's he doing?

Caroline: He's alright. He's alive.

(Elena approaches Aaron. She begins to bite her wrist to give him her blood.)

Caroline: Elena, wait. I was thinking that Jesse could do it. (to Jesse) You're a vampire now. You may have hurt him, but you can also heal him with your blood.

(Caroline grabs Jesse's arm, biting into him. She guides Jesse over to Aaron and feeds him his blood, watching as Aaron begins to awake - with his neck wound closing up.)

Jesse: Holy crap. That is insane.

Caroline: (to Elena): You want to teach him about compulsion?

(Elena smiles at Caroline.)

Elena: You been keeping an eye on Jesse?

Caroline: Yep. I've been teaching him the art of sublimating vampire hunger via grain alcohol.

Elena: And I sent Damon to question Wes.

Caroline: You realize that Damon's going to kill Wes, right?

Elena: He's not going to kill him. He's getting information.

Caroline: You realize you're wrong, right?

Elena: Okay. Look. I know you're not crazy about Damon and I being together--

Caroline: No. No. It's fine. I'm fine with you two being together, as long as you can acknowledge the kind of person you are with.

(Elena stabs Jesse in the back at the same time as Caroline walks in. Jesse falls on the floor and Caroline goes to help him. Elena goes to help Damon and Jesse dies)

Caroline:What did you do?

Elena: He was gonna kill Damon...

Caroline: But we promised that we would help him.

Damon: She didn't have a choice, all right? Once he had the taste of vampire blood, there was nothing stopping him. Go ask Dr. Frankenstein. I'll go deal with him. (He lets go of Elena and heads back into the lab.) Ugh!

(Elena turns to Caroline.)

Elena: Caroline, I'm so sorry. I...

Caroline: Yeah. Me, too. Because the Elena that I used to know would have given Jesse a chance.

(Elena looks hurt.)

(Elena and Caroline are cleaning up after the party.)

Caroline: I'm sorry. I didn't mean what I said earlier. It was out of line. It just sucks, you know, cause Jesse was one of the good ones.

Elena: I know, and I wouldn't have killed him if I could have done something. He was dangerous. I need you to believe that. (Caroline doesn't respond and keeps on cleaning up.) I need you to believe me when I tell you that Caroline.

Caroline: I believe you, ok? I believe you want to celebrate the fact that we can go to school and function like regular freshmen. I get that. I want that, too, but, Elena, when are you gonna figure out that the outside world is not nearly as dangerous as the person you're inviting into your own bedroom?

Elena: (sarcastically) Wow! Why don't you tell me how you really feel?

Caroline: The day that I stop telling you is the day that we're no longer best friends, and I hope that day never comes.

(Caroline walks away.)

(Caroline leaves a voice message to Elena.)

Caroline: Hey, Elena. I'm probably going to stay at my Mom's tonight. I think I am officially homesick. So I'll let you know when I'm... Oh. My. God. Call me as soon as you get this!

-- The Cell

(Caroline and Bonnie enter the dorm room carrying a tray of food)

Caroline: Okay. Time to wake up, sleepy head.

Elena: No. I'm not leaving this bed.

Bonnie: Which is why we brought breakfast to you.

(They pull the blanket off of Elena)

Elena: What's all this?

Caroline: This is your breakup breakfast!

Elena: My what?

(Caroline makes a mimosa for Elena)

Bonnie: So that's it? You're giving up?

Caroline: As she should! He did say, and I quote, "I'm a bad person. I am bad for you. And I'm choosing to let you go."

Elena: You memorized my break up?

Caroline: Of course I did.

(Caroline hands Elena the glass)

Caroline: Drink this.

(Elena takes the drink)

Elena: I just have to face reality. When Damon makes up his mind about something, it's done.

Caroline: Yeah.

(Elena's phone begins to ring on a neighboring dresser, causing Elena to perk up. Caroline goes to pick up the phone, seeing Stefan is calling)

Caroline: It's Stefan.

Elena: Tell him I don't feel like talking.

Bonnie: (to Caroline) She doesn't feel like talking.

Caroline: (to Stefan) She doesn't feel like talking.

Stefan: Well, she's going to want to talk about this.

(Caroline realize that she forgot to tell Elena about Stefan and Katherine)

Caroline to Elena: Oh my... I forgot to tell you. You were kidnapped and hostaged and...

Caroline: You okay?

Elena: Yeah.. uh, I uh, just had a really crazy dream.

(Elena and Caroline enter the busy grill)

Caroline: (looking around) Well I guess my mom's not here yet. I'm gonna get us some coffees.

Elena: Sure.

(Elena is grasping a set of keys in her hand. When she drops them, she starts daydreaming again.)

Caroline: (distant) My mom's five minutes away. Elena? Hello? Elena!

(Elena snaps out of the vision.)

Elena: How did I get here? I was just standing at the door.

Caroline: Uh, you walked? Hang on. Did you just have one of those dreams, like, right here?

Elena: It didn't feel like a dream, okay? It felt like it was real, like I was just there.

Caroline: That's weird.

Elena: Caroline, if you bite your tongue any harder, you'll bleed. Say it.

Caroline: It's Psych 101. Actually, it's whatever comes before 101. You told Damon that you couldn't see him anymore, and now you're having dreams about Stefan?

Elena: It's not just about Stefan, okay? My parents were still alive. It was like a different life.

(Caroline's cell phone rings and she picks it up.Is Stefan, he tells her that is happening to him the same as Elena)

(Elena and Stefan talk outside the cabin while unloading the car.Caroline comes outside.)

Caroline : Good news! So we don't have to be invited in, which is actually super sad if you think about it.

Stefan : Hmm.

Caroline : Am I interrupting something?

Elena : No, no. We're just, um--

Stefan : Unpacking. We're unpacking. Uh, here you go.

(Stefan hands Caroline a couple of bags to take inside. She's suspicious but laughs it off.)

Caroline : Ok. Heh.

(Caroline takes the bags inside.Caroline walks out onto the porch and observes them, eavesdropping, Caroline sees that Elena and Stefan are fiddling .)

Caroline : (raising her voice) For a couple of doppel-targets, you two seem to be taking this all in stride.

Stefan : Yeah. Well, you know, a tribe of ancient wannabe witches want to drain of us our blood and eliminate supernatural beings? I've had worse.

(Elena and Stefan carry supplies inside.)

(They are playing "never have I ever", after many drinks)

Caroline : Never have I ever kissed a Salvatore brother... Today.

(They all are in an awkward silence)

Caroline : So are you gonna drink or--

Elena : Are you implying something?

Stefan : Well, I'm gonna get another round. Does anybody--

Damon : Never have I ever lied about where Enzo is.

Caroline : Ok. What is going on?

Stefan : Nothing obviously because nobody's drinking.

(Damon and Stefan start arguing and Elena says that she is drunk and wants to go to sleep, she leaves.)

(Caroline and Elena go to the forest to look for Luke)

Caroline : Luke? Luke? Where are you?

Elena : Maybe Luke-- You're upset.

Caroline : I'm not upset. Just looking for Luke, you know, Luke, who was here to protect you and Stefan, Luke, who's now missing because you and Stefan lied about where Enzo was, and now the Travelers can find you, do their spell, and wipe us all off the face of the earth!

Elena : I was worried that if Damon found out--

Caroline : What, he'd flip out and spiral and kill a bunch of innocent people? Yeah, I get that. I, however, am not Damon, so the fact that you lied to me about it makes less sense.

Elena : I just didn't want to put you In an awkward position.

إيلينا  : لا ، لكني أحب الشرب في ساحة انتظار السيارات مسبقًا.

(يأتي تايلر خلف إيلينا ويبدأ في التحدث في الهاتف)

تايلر  : كارولين ، أنت قادم.

كارولين  : تايلر ، لا تتصرف وكأن لديك أي أرضية لتقف عليها. لقد تخطيت سنة كاملة ...

تايلر  : وطاردتني لمدة عام كامل! لذلك أنا هنا .. الآن احصل على مؤخرتك هنا.

(لوقا يقف خلف تايلر وقد لفت انتباه إيلينا ، وسحب الحقيبة الصغيرة في حقيبته. تلوح به إيلينا بلا مبالاة)

إيلينا  : كارولين ، سأصطحبك في السادسة مساءً غدًا. تمام؟ اجلب روح مدرستك. وداعا!

(إيلينا تغلق الهاتف)

(إيلينا تتغذى على سارة وظهور كارولين)

كارولين  : يا إلهي! ماذا تكون--

إيلينا  : كارولين. ليست كذلك--

(سارة تبدأ بالفرار)

إيلينا  : لا!

(وصلت إلينا إلى حدود ميستيك فولز وذراعها تحترق في ضوء الشمس ؛ سارة تبتعد ، سارة تذهل وتمسك برقبتها)

سارة  : ساعدوني! ساعدني من فضلك.

كارولين  : ماذا فعلت؟ لماذا بحق الجحيم تتغذى على الناس؟

إيلينا  : لا بأس. لقد أرغمت الجميع.

كارولين  : قف ، قف ، قف. تشبث. إذن أنت مخترق الحدود؟

إيلينا  : ماذا؟

كارولين  : نعم ، هل تعلم أن أمي كانت بالخارج للبحث عن مصاص دماء متجول؟

إيلينا  : الأعشاب ... كان لوك يعطيني. يجعلونني عطشان جدا. (تبتعد عن كارولين) أنا لا أفكر بشكل مستقيم.

كارولين  : توقف ، أي أعشاب؟

Elena : They make me see Damon. (turns to Caroline) I can talk to him, and, and I can be with him, and -

Caroline : God, is this what you've been doing this whole time? Hallucinating your dead boyfriend?

Elena : I tried to grieve him, Caroline. Trust me, I know grief. I've got grieving down to a science at this point, and I tried. But every time I let it sink in that I'm never gonna see him again, I feel like I'm gonna die.

Caroline : Oh God, I get it okay? I do. But, there are better ways to get through this.

Elena : Like what? Like dropping out of school and having picnics with my mom, near the town border? Or maybe I could pull a Stefan and bounce from country to country, chasing some false hope that we're gonna find a way to bring Damon and Bonnie back. We're all getting through it. This is me, getting through it, okay?

Caroline : Yeah but you're not getting through it, Elena. You're just pressing pause. (sighs) Look, I'll call my mom and she can fix all this. But you need to get out of here, go hide, okay? So just... go.

(Elena gets into her car)

(Elena is sitting at the edge of a bench with her phone to her ear.)

Elena : You're the last person I think would object to me erasing positive memories of Damon from my head.

(Caroline is in her car, her phone to her ear also.)

Caroline : Yeah, but we are literally chasing a lead. W-what if we find something out? Yeah, you know what if Damon returns home and everything returns back to normal? And you're just sitting there all confused and weird?

(Elena stands up.)

Elena : Then Alaric will bring back my memories.

Caroline : But--

Elena : But what? Go ahead, Caroline say what you need to say. I don't want to...pressure you into agreeing.

Caroline : I--don't know what to say, I was actually trying to think of what Bonnie would say.

(Elena sighs and walks to a tree, she begins to kick it softly with her shoe.)

Elena : And?

Caroline : And...she'd say that you should do what's best for you.

Elena : Look, I think it's great that you still have hope, I really do but--for my own survival I need to let him go.

Caroline : Well, then go on with your what-would-bonnie-bennett-do plan.

(Caroline laughs.)

Caroline : I'll make bumper stickers.

(Elena giggles.)

Elena : I love you.

Caroline : I love you too.

(They hang up the phone.)

(Caroline is in her car, balling her eyes out. Her makeup is smeared and she is practically wailing. But then her cell phone buzzes and she picks it up, she attempts to take the tearyness from her voice.)

Caroline : Hey.

(Elena is taking some clothes out.)

Elena : Put on some party clothes and come to Whitmore. Tyler's coming over and we are going out.

(Caroline laughs.)

Caroline : You sound good.

Elena : I am good, I had a good day. I ditched all my classes and hung out with Ric, and we um...we talked about Bonnie.

(Caroline is softly crying, without Elena hearing her.)
